Yunnan middle school history exam paper finds errors in Edison's biography, three people involved in test design suspended for investigation

The Yunnan Provincial Admissions and Examination Authority issued a notice on June 21st, confirming two errors in Exhibit 2 of Question 29 in the 2026 Yunnan Provincial High School Entrance Examination history subject: first, Thomas Edison’s birth information was incorrectly written as “born in New York in 1882” (should have been “born in Ohio in 1847”); second, the statement “invented electric lights, telephones, movies and other patent technologies, totaling more than 1,000” was imprecise, and should have read “obtained more than 1,000 invention patents in fields such as electric lights, telephones, and movies.” The notice indicated that since the scoring criteria for sub-question 2 of this question do not involve Edison’s time and place of birth, after comprehensive expert review, it was determined that the error had a limited impact on candidates’ answers, and scoring will be uniformly carried out based on the established scoring rubric. The Yunnan Provincial Department of Education has established an investigation team, and has suspended the posts of the leading official in charge of the Yunnan Provincial Admissions and Examination Authority, the director of the Examination Proposition Department, and the secretary for the history subject’s high school entrance examination proposition, while initiating serious accountability and responsibility procedures against the proposition team leader and members.
