Meta announced on June 16 that its social platform Threads has surpassed 500 million monthly active users, less than three years after its launch in July 2023. At the same time, the platform has introduced several new features: the previously beta-running Communities feature is now fully launched, with a dedicated icon, a new Communities Hub, an expanded Champion designation, progress indicators when a topic is close to becoming an official community, and local community support for specific languages. Live Chats will be rolled out to more communities over the coming weeks, with support for co-hosting and dynamic quoting. On the algorithmic control front, the platform has launched the “Your Algo” feature — users can privately set whether they want to see more or less of certain topics, with expiration options of 1 day, 3 days, or 7 days. These settings are visible only to the user and are managed in the same interface as the public expression tool “Dear Algo” launched in February. Your Algo launches today in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.
Instagram head Connor Hayes told TechCrunch that the Communities feature has become a key driver of Threads user growth: “When users come to the app with a clear purpose and quickly find like-minded people, the overall experience is better.” Threads’ milestone of 500 million monthly active users comes as X (Twitter) user numbers stagnate or decline — X has around 600 million monthly active users, but its daily mobile active users have been shrinking since 2025, while Threads has grown significantly over the same period. Meta says it will continue to iterate on the product based on user feedback.
