YouTube Podcasts surpasses 1 billion monthly active users, adds AI recommendations, Auto Speed, and travel mode for Premium users

YouTube announced on May 28 three new podcast features for Premium users: AI-powered recommendations, Auto Speed adaptive playback, and an “On-the-go” mode. The AI recommendation feature is an extension of the existing “Ask Music” tool, offering personalized show suggestions based on listening preferences, current mood, or subscribed programs. Auto Speed automatically increases playback speed when the host speaks slowly or content has high information density — unlike existing fixed speed options, it adapts more smoothly to changes in conversational pace. On-the-go mode provides quick controls for skipping, fast-forwarding, and switching episodes, optimized for background playback during commutes, workouts, and similar scenarios. Auto Speed and On-the-go mode are now available on Android, with the iOS version rolling out in the coming months. YouTube also revealed that Premium users accumulated over 800 million hours of podcast viewing in April, and YouTube Podcasts now has over 1 billion monthly active users.

This update is seen as YouTube’s latest move to compete head-on with Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Netflix in the podcast market — Netflix recently increased its investment in video podcasts. YouTube’s strategy is to maintain its home-field advantage in video podcasts while using personalized discovery and hands-free features to attract users from audio-first platforms.
