Apple has pushed back the launch of its first AI smart glasses, internally codenamed N50, from a previously expected late 2026/early 2027 window to late 2027, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported in his Power On newsletter on May 31. The primary culprit is difficulty perfecting the visual AI features that Apple had planned as a core differentiator. The display-free glasses will work as an iPhone accessory — similar to AirPods or Apple Watch — and will feature oval-shaped cameras, multiple colors, and a range of frame styles at a price point Gurman puts in the $200–$500 range, positioning them directly against Meta Ray-Bans. Tim Cook reportedly views the product as his top priority before transferring leadership to John Ternus on September 1. Gurman does not expect an in-lens AR display for at least several years; a lighter Vision Pro successor (“Vision Air”) is similarly pushed out to no earlier than late 2028 or 2029.
The newsletter also covered several other items in Apple’s pipeline. New Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini models are described as “nearly ready to go.” Early-stage development of iOS 28 and macOS 28 has already begun — Gurman characterizes the 2027 software cycle as “far more significant” than the current iOS 27 generation, with iOS/iPadOS 28 carrying the internal codename “Bell” and macOS 28 going by “Poppy.” A separate camera pendant wearable also remains in development and could arrive as early as 2027, though it trails AirPods with cameras in the internal timeline.
