iOS 27 reportedly set to include AI-powered grammar checking and natural language shortcuts

Bloomberg reported on May 18, citing sources familiar with the matter, that Apple is preparing three new AI features for iOS 27 and iPadOS 27. First, an enhanced version of the Writing Tools will include a Grammarly-like grammar checker. A semi-transparent menu pops up from the bottom of the screen, displaying the original text alongside suggested edits; users can accept each suggestion individually, apply them all at once, or ignore them entirely. Above the keyboard, there will also be a new toggle labeled “Write With Siri,” and when Siri detects a text input field, it can prompt the user with the “Help Me Write” option. Second, the Shortcuts app will support creating shortcuts using natural language—users simply describe what they want, and the system automatically builds and installs the workflow without requiring manual setup, thereby significantly lowering the barrier to entry. Third, the system wallpaper selector will feature an AI-generated wallpaper option powered by Image Playground, allowing users to customize backgrounds for both the lock screen and home screen; meanwhile, Image Playground itself will receive an upgrade to a more realistic image model in iOS 27.

These features have not yet been officially announced, and the sources requested anonymity. Apple is set to unveil iOS 27 at WWDC 2026 on June 8, with the official release expected in September. Bloomberg notes that this move aims to help Apple catch up to Samsung and Google, which have already rolled out generative Android widgets and smarter voice input capabilities, while Samsung’s Galaxy devices boast a broader range of AI tools. The new grammar-checking functionality in iOS 27’s Writing Tools builds upon the original suite introduced in 2024, extending its capabilities to the syntactic level and positioning it as direct competition to third-party services such as Grammarly.
