AlphaFold core researcher and 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry winner John Jumper announced on X on June 20 that after nearly nine years at Google DeepMind, he will join Anthropic. In his post, Jumper thanked DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis for giving him the opportunity to lead the AlphaFold team just six months after finishing his PhD. According to Bloomberg, Jumper has recently been a core member of Google’s programming tools development team, which had previously struggled in corporate sales. Jumper and Hassabis jointly won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for AlphaFold—an AI model that predicts the three-dimensional structure of proteins from amino acid sequences—which was named one of the most important scientific breakthroughs of the year in previous TechCrunch reporting. Anthropic did not immediately comment.
Jumper’s departure is part of a rare and concentrated wave of talent loss at DeepMind in recent times: that same week, Character AI co-founder Noam Shazeer also announced he was leaving DeepMind for OpenAI, creating a two-way talent flow between competitors. DeepMind has major initiatives in protein folding, robotics, and general reasoning, and the simultaneous outflow of top researchers could signal to the market that the battle for talent among leading AI labs has entered an unprecedentedly intense phase. For Anthropic, recruiting a Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry represents a major strategic victory in the competition with OpenAI and DeepMind for top scientists, and adds significant backing to the expansion of its scientific and biomedical AI capabilities.
