GitHub Models Stops Accepting New Users, Existing Users Unaffected for Now; Full Shutdown Date TBD

On June 16, GitHub announced the official start of the GitHub Models retirement process. As a first step, new organization and enterprise accounts (both free and paid plans) that have never used GitHub Models before will no longer be able to enable the feature as of that date and will not see the relevant entry in the interface. Existing users with an active usage history will not be affected by this change and can continue to use the Playground, API, and all models as usual. GitHub stated that it will provide further details in subsequent communications, including a specific timeline for the complete shutdown date, and recommended that users with new AI model access needs switch to Azure AI Foundry’s model catalog.

Launched in 2024 as a free AI model trial platform for developers, GitHub Models offered a unified access interface to multiple models from vendors such as OpenAI, Meta, and Mistral. This retirement aligns with Microsoft’s recent strategy to accelerate the integration of GitHub’s AI capabilities into the unified platforms of GitHub Copilot and Azure AI Foundry. Earlier this month, GitHub also announced the closure of several of its game studios and is currently guiding users away from third-party AI coding tools toward its internal tools, as its enterprise AI product line undergoes a comprehensive consolidation.
