Midjourney, known for its AI image generation tools, is entering the medical hardware field with its new business, Midjourney Medical. Its core product is a full-body ultrasound tomography scanner. Users step into a shallow pool of water, and as they descend, they pass through a ring-shaped device containing approximately 500,000 tiny ultrasound elements — each capable of both transmitting and receiving. These elements emit ultrasound waves from all angles toward the body and collect echo data in real time. Multiple computers process the massive volume of data in parallel to reconstruct 3D body images with a resolution close to that of an MRI and sub-millimeter accuracy, all with a target completion time of under 60 seconds. Midjourney states that the technology involves no radiation and relies only on sound waves and water. At this stage, it provides body composition maps rather than diagnostic conclusions, and the company has already submitted test results to the FDA, with plans to gradually apply for more diagnostic capabilities in the future. From 2025 to 2026, the company plans to continuously optimize the algorithms and hardware, complete the development of a second-generation device, and establish its first “research hydrotherapy center.”
To lower the psychological barrier to medical-grade scanning, Midjourney is simultaneously launching the Midjourney Spa program — integrating the scanner into a setting featuring a hot pool, sauna, and cold plunge pool. The first location is set to open in downtown San Francisco in 2027, with scanning occurring naturally as a “byproduct” of the spa experience. The company’s long-term goal is to deploy over 50,000 scanners globally by 2031, with a monthly scanning capacity of 1 billion. Midjourney emphasizes that it “has no investors” and is a fully user-funded, community-driven research lab, stating that this is part of its ongoing exploration of the “foundational layer of human experience.” Beyond the medical project, it has other undisclosed projects in the pipeline.
