Nissan to manufacture cars for China's Chery at Sunderland plant, targeting 2027 launch

Nissan Motor Co. said on June 3 that it is considering contract manufacturing passenger cars for China’s Chery Automobile at its Sunderland plant in the UK, aiming to start operations by 2027 at the earliest, in order to improve the plant’s low capacity utilization rate of around 50%. Nissan has signed a memorandum of understanding with Chery’s local subsidiary. Under the plan, the plant’s two existing production lines will be consolidated into one line dedicated to Nissan’s own models (including the new all-electric Leaf), while the other line will be repurposed for Chery models. The plant’s equipment will remain owned by Nissan, and employment for workers will be maintained.
