Gurman: iOS 27 will add AI-powered photo bill splitting to Apple Cash, plus custom tickets in Wallet

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported on June 1 that iOS 27 and watchOS 27 will add a bill-splitting feature to Apple Cash, expected to be officially announced at WWDC 2026 (June 8). Here’s how it works: After a user takes a photo of a restaurant bill or receipt, the system uses AI and OCR to automatically identify individual items, taxes, and tips. The user can then assign each item to different members, and an Apple Cash payment request is automatically generated. The feature will be integrated into both Wallet and Messages, and Apple Watch users can confirm payment requests directly on their watch. Since Apple Cash is currently only available in the US, this feature is expected to launch there first.

The same report also confirmed another new Wallet feature called “Create a Pass”: users can scan physical cards such as gym membership cards, concert tickets, or local event tickets to generate a digital pass and save it to Wallet — filling a gap for many types of cards that don’t natively support Wallet integration. Both features continue Apple’s recent path of evolving Wallet from a payment tool into a broader daily financial management platform. The bill-splitting feature will directly compete with third-party services like Splitwise, Venmo, and Cash App.
