Last.fm Spins Out as Independent Company Nearly Two Decades After CBS Acquisition

Last.fm announced on May 27 that it has become an independent company, ending an ownership chain that began with CBS’s $280 million acquisition of the music scrobbling service in 2007 and later passed through Paramount Global to Skydance Media. The forum post reads: “Today, Last.fm begins a new chapter as an independent company. Ownership has changed, but the product you use every day has not.” The same team will continue operating the service; user accounts, listening histories, scrobbles, data and privacy settings, and Pro subscriptions remain unchanged. Last.fm said it would share details about future plans “in the weeks ahead.”
