According to Reuters, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk posted on X on May 28 clarifying that the lease agreement between SpaceX and Anthropic regarding the Colossus AI training data center cluster is set for just 180 days, rather than the multi-year deal previously assumed by many. Musk wrote, “SpaceX has not committed to leasing Colossus for several years, though such a possibility does exist in the future.” He also noted that under the terms of the agreement, both parties may terminate the lease after 180 days upon providing 90 days’ prior written notice. Earlier this month, SpaceX and Anthropic entered into a computing power cooperation deal, under which Anthropic rents data center capacity from SpaceX; per SpaceX’s prospectus, Anthropic pays SpaceX roughly $1.25 billion each month for this service.
Musk further emphasized that proposing a short-term lease was SpaceX’s own condition, not something demanded by Anthropic: “The short-term lease was our requirement, not something Anthropic requested. We won’t leave them stranded; we’ll provide reasonable exit options. However, should computing power become extremely scarce, as I’ve mentioned before, we might need to reclaim it at some point.” This statement downgraded the nature of the Colossus partnership from a ‘long-term infrastructure outsourcing arrangement’ to a ‘flexible short-term agreement’, indicating that SpaceX retains full priority rights to allocate resources between its own needs and commercial leases. Currently, SpaceX is actively pursuing its IPO process, and this computing power collaboration with Anthropic has been listed as a key revenue stream in its prospectus.
