OpenAI to Remove GPT-5.2 and GPT-5.3-Codex from Codex on June 2, Replacing with GPT-5.5 as Default

OpenAI Codex engineering lead Thibault Sottiaux announced on May 27 that GPT-5.2 and GPT-5.3-Codex will be sunset within the Codex agent for ChatGPT users on June 2, citing compute fleet simplification. GPT-5.5 will become the default frontier model for free-plan users going forward. Both deprecated models will remain accessible via the API. Sottiaux noted that GPT-5.2, released just five months ago in December 2025, now accounts for less than 1% of production usage and is considered “quite outdated” — a marker of how quickly the model landscape has shifted.
