The HDMI Forum formally released the HDMI 2.2 specification in June 2025, raising maximum bandwidth to 96Gbps — double that of HDMI 2.1 — using an updated signaling technology called FRL2. The new spec enables uncompressed 4K video at up to 240Hz, uncompressed 8K at 60Hz, and — with chroma subsampling — 4K at 480Hz. With compression still available, the spec supports even more extreme modes such as 1440p at over 1,000Hz. HDMI Licensing Administrator CEO Rob Tobias told ARMdevices at Computex 2026 that chip manufacturers are expected to begin sampling FRL2 silicon this year, with the first compatible products anticipated in 2027.
Real-world adoption, however, is likely to be slow and uneven. HDMI 2.2 rolls out in multiple bandwidth tiers — 64Gbps, 80Gbps, and 96Gbps — and certification does not require hitting the top speed, meaning two devices both labeled “HDMI 2.2” could perform very differently. GPU support is not expected until late 2027 at the earliest, and early availability will be limited to premium hardware. In the PC space, DisplayPort 2.1 already delivers up to 80Gbps and remains the preferred interface for high-end monitors, while licensing costs may slow HDMI 2.2’s uptake. HDMI retains its edge in living-room ecosystems through features like ARC, CEC, and ALLM; HDMI 2.2 adds a Latency Indication Protocol (LIP) aimed at improving audio-video sync with soundbars and AV receivers. For most users, the spec is a foundation for future hardware rather than a reason to upgrade now.
