Fantia temporarily withdraws mosaic standard revision for 2D genres, will re-consult legal authorities

Fantia (ファンティア), a creator support platform, announced on May 29 via its official X account that it would revert to the previous guidelines until new standards are established, and apologized for causing confusion among creators. This follows a major tightening of censorship and mosaic standards for adult 2D works announced in a guideline revision. The company stated that it is currently renegotiating the future direction and standards for the 2D genre with the legal authorities that had raised concerns, and urged creators to wait until the next announcement before making corrections to past works.

The controversy began with the revision notice on May 19. The new standards required mosaic processing that makes the object’s original form unrecognizable, and deemed transparent mosaics, light blurs, and line bars as insufficient. The rules applied retroactively not only to new posts but also to past works, and hinted at account suspension and police reporting for violations, sparking strong backlash on social media. Fantia explained that the revision stemmed from strict guidance and criticism from relevant authorities from a legal perspective, leading to a widespread view that the platform did not voluntarily tighten the rules. The company says it will announce new standards and their effective date as soon as possible.
