Chinese Embassy in Indonesia issues warning: telecom fraudsters previously active in Cambodia and other countries are now moving to Indonesia

On May 27, the Chinese Embassy in Indonesia issued a consular advisory stating that it had recently received numerous requests for assistance from Chinese citizens who fell victim to telecom fraud in Indonesia, resulting in significant financial losses. The embassy noted indications that individuals previously involved in telecom fraud in countries like Cambodia are gradually relocating to Indonesia to carry out similar crimes; Indonesian authorities have since dismantled multiple fraud dens. Currently, the main types of fraud prevalent in Indonesia include impersonation scams involving government officials, currency exchange fraud, visa-related scams, “pig butchering” schemes, entrapment scams, and investment fraud. The embassy urges Chinese citizens to refrain from disclosing personal information to strangers, avoid making transfers or clicking on suspicious links. Should they become victims of fraud, they may call Indonesia’s emergency police line at +62-110 or China’s Global Consular Protection Hotline at +86-10-12308.
